Construction Youth Trust, CYT,  supports young people whose journey to work can be challenging due to barriers relating to their financial circumstances, lack of awareness of opportunities in the industry, low self-esteem, gender or ethnicity. With the support of a number of major construction companies, CYT raises awareness and assists disadvantaged young people to access employment in the construction sector. The Trust achieves its goal by undertaking a number of programmes ranging from construction skills courses delivered via a mobile classroom to hands-on learning on projects for local communities, and from work placement schemes to guidance sessions.

Working nationally with offices in London, Manchester, Cardiff & Birmingham CYT has secured public sector contracts and received funding from Lottery, national and regional donors through the fundraising support services Charity Fundraising Ltd provided.

Charity Fundraising Ltd has worked with the Construction Youth Trust since 2010, providing services including writing charity tenders and trust funding bids and in this time £693,244 has been achieved  in grant and contract funding to support the Trust’s activities.

Supporting and developing people & organisational culture: Alongside advice and assistance with the trust’s fundraising, Charity Fundraising Ltd delivered a series of fundraising awareness workshops for CYT’s senior managers, programme managers and head office team. The underlying message was that fundraising reaches into every part of an organisation; all team members may contribute to the pool of information and knowledge that is essential to support applications for funding. Fundraising was expanded beyond seeking grants to include public sector and EU tendering, an area new to CYT. We worked with CYT to put in place the systems and procedures necessary to support public sector tendering including monitoring, evaluation and impact reporting. As the demands of fundraising grew we assisted with the recruitment and induction training of an in-house fundraising assistant.  As the fundraising landscape changed, we highlighted the growth of social investment models and the requirements they place on an organisation seeking funding.

Financial sustainability: With CYT we looked at the long term picture of fundraising and income generation, and explored social enterprise as an income generator, consistent with CYT’s charitable objectives and business plans to reduce reliance on other more competitive sources of funding.

Strategy, planning and managing change: We researched the high level trends in the funding market, described them in strategy papers, delivered a presentation to the CYT Board and participated in a Board-level workshop, identifying and recommending a funding strategy.
