Lawsuit Fuels Accessibility Debate

US: the National Federation of the Blind prepares for battle

The international Web Accessibility debate has been heating up this month, courtesy of our friends across the Atlantic, with a rash of articles following a lawsuit that was filed against www.target.com.

A blind man in America, with the support of the National Federation of the Blind is reportedly suing www.target.com, over accessibility issues with their website. The San Francisco Chronicle quote the lawsuit as claiming the company “excludes the blind from full and equal participation in the growing Internet economy that is increasingly a fundamental part of daily life.”

Articles have also been posted on Web Accessibility In Mind, Disability Rights Advocates, Overlawyered, The Guild of Accessible Website Designers, and the Web Standards Project.

If successful, this lawsuit could have serious implications for many American organisations, and where appropriate their British counterparts; there is speculation that the problem system is based on the same engine as Amazon.
